A Parisian Twist with Cognac: The French 75 Cocktail

The French 75 gets a delightful makeover with this Cognac version!  This recipe retains the essence of the classic – a light and bubbly drink – but swaps gin for Cognac, creating a whole new world of flavor. The rich and complex notes of Cognac intertwine with the bright citrus and sweetness, resulting in a sophisticated and satisfying cocktail.

1 ounce VSOP or XO Cognac (for a more complex flavor)

½ ounce fresh lemon juice

½ ounce simple syrup

2 ounces chilled Champagne (or other dry sparkling wine)

Garnish: Lemon twist

Instructions (Preparation Time: 2 minutes):

Chill Your Flute: Fill a champagne flute with ice cubes. Swirl the ice to chill the glass, then discard the water.

Combine and Shake: Add the Cognac, lemon juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds to ensure all ingredients are well chilled and combined.

Strain and Top: Strain the vibrant amber liquid into your chilled champagne flute. Gently top the drink with chilled Champagne, allowing the bubbles to rise naturally.

Citrusy Touch: Express the oils from a lemon twist over the drink by gently squeezing it and discard the twist or add it to the glass for garnish.

Cognac Selection: Opt for a VSOP (Very Superior Old Pale) or XO (Extra Old) Cognac for a richer and more complex flavor profile that complements the other ingredients beautifully.

Fresh is Best: Always use freshly squeezed lemon juice for the most vibrant flavor and to perfectly balance the sweetness and richness of the Cognac.

Sweetness to Your Taste: Simple syrup adds a touch of sweetness, but adjust the amount based on your preference and the sweetness of your Cognac. Start with ½ ounce and add more if desired.

Sparkling Options: While Champagne is traditional, you can substitute it with another dry sparkling wine like Prosecco or Cava. Choose whichever suits your taste and budget.

Batching for a Crowd: This recipe scales well for gatherings. Simply combine Cognac, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a pitcher filled with ice. Strain the mixture into chilled champagne flutes and top with Champagne.

The French 75 Cognac Cocktail is a delightful twist on a classic.  The rich and complex flavors of Cognac add depth and sophistication to the drink, making it perfect for those who appreciate a unique and satisfying cocktail experience.  So raise a glass, savor the interplay of flavors, and discover a new way to enjoy the timeless French 75!
