A Rum Old Fashioned Recipe

The Rum Old Fashioned is a delightful twist on the classic whiskey-based cocktail. It offers a warm and flavorful blend of aged rum, bitters, and sugar, perfect for those who enjoy a complex and satisfying drink.

2 ounces aged rum (dark rum or amber rum recommended)

1 teaspoon demerara sugar (or simple syrup)

2-3 dashes Angostura bitters

2 dashes orange bitters (optional)

Orange twist (for garnish)

Maraschino cherry (for garnish, optional)

El Dorado 12yr Old Rum – 750 ML

Chill an old-fashioned glass by filling it with ice cubes and letting it sit for a minute or two. Discard the water before starting.

If using demerara sugar, place it in the bottom of the chilled glass and muddle it slightly with a bar spoon to release its flavor. You can skip this step if using simple syrup.

Add Angostura bitters and orange bitters (if using) to the glass.

Pour in the aged rum and stir gently with a bar spoon for about 15 seconds to dilute and chill the drink.

Express the oils from an orange twist over the drink and add it to the glass along with a maraschino cherry (optional). Enjoy your Rum Old Fashioned!

Adjust the sweetness to your taste preference. You can start with less sugar and add more to taste.

Experiment with different aged rums. Explore various types to find your favorite flavor profile for this cocktail.

For a smoky twist, use a peated rum, which will add a unique layer of smokiness to the drink.

If you don't have demerara sugar, you can substitute it with simple syrup or granulated sugar.

With its rich flavors and customizable sweetness, the Rum Old Fashioned is a delightful way to explore the world of rum cocktails. So gather your ingredients,  and enjoy this flavorful twist on a classic!
