Black Ship Cocktail

The Black Ship cocktail is a historical tribute, named after the naval vessels commanded by Commodore Matthew Perry, whose arrival in 1853 forced an end to Japan's isolation and opened the door to Western influences, including whiskey. This cocktail features a delightful interplay of Japanese whiskey, fruity notes, and a touch of citrus.

Ingredients:

5 oz Japanese Whiskey (preferably something smooth and mellow)

1 oz Pomegranate Juice

25 oz Port Wine

1 tsp Lemon Juice

Kikiori Whiskey, The Woodsman – 750ML

Instructions:

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. This ensures your drink will be nice and cold when you serve it.

Add the Japanese whiskey, pomegranate juice, port wine, and lemon juice to the shaker.

Shake the ingredients vigorously for about 15 seconds. This chills the drink, blends the flavors, and creates a light froth on top.

Strain the mixture into a chilled coupe or martini glass.

Tips:

While any Japanese whiskey will work, a smoother and mellower expression will complement the other ingredients better. Look for whiskies with notes of vanilla, honey, or citrus.

Don't have pomegranate juice? You can substitute cranberry juice or a splash of raspberry liqueur for a similar tart and fruity flavor profile.

The port wine adds a touch of sweetness. If you prefer a drier drink, use a slightly smaller amount of port or omit it altogether.

For an extra touch, you can garnish your Black Ship cocktail with a lemon twist or a pomegranate seed.
