Classic Metropolitan Cocktail Recipe

This version predates the more well-known vodka-based Metropolitan and is a brandy-based cocktail with a drier taste profile. It's a sophisticated choice for those who enjoy richer flavors.

2 ounces brandy

1 ounce sweet vermouth

1/2 teaspoon simple syrup

2 dashes aromatic bitters

Orange twist (for garnish)

Fill a rocks glass with ice cubes. Swirl the ice around for a few seconds, then discard the water to ensure a chilled glass.

In a mixing glass filled with ice, add brandy, sweet vermouth, simple syrup, and bitters.

Stir gently with a bar spoon for about 15 seconds to dilute and chill the drink. Strain the mixture into the chilled rocks glass, discarding the ice.

Express the oils from an orange twist over the drink and garnish the rim of the glass. Enjoy your classic Metropolitan!

If you don't have simple syrup, you can make a quick substitute by dissolving equal parts sugar and water in a saucepan over low heat. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then let cool before using.

Experiment with different brandies to find your favorite flavor profile. A cognac or apple brandy can add interesting complexities to the drink.
