Embrace Citrusy Depths: The Refreshing Japanese Sour

The Japanese Sour takes inspiration from the classic Sour cocktail but adds a delightful twist with Japanese whiskey and yuzu juice.  This vibrant and flavorful drink offers a perfect balance of sweet, tart, and boozy, making it a fantastic choice for any occasion.


2 ounces Japanese Whiskey

1 ounce Lemon Juice (freshly squeezed)

¾ ounce Yuzu Juice (freshly squeezed, or ¼ ounce yuzu kosho paste diluted with water)

½ ounce Simple Syrup

1 Egg White (optional)

Angostura Bitters (for garnish)

Maraschino Cherry (for garnish)


Dry Shake (optional): If using egg white, add all ingredients except the bitters and garnish to a shaker without ice. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to create a frothy texture.

Wet Shake: Add ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for another 15 seconds to chill the drink and dilute the ingredients slightly.

Strain: Strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe glass.

Garnish: Using a bar spoon, add a few drops of Angostura bitters to create a marbled effect on the drink's surface. Finish with a maraschino cherry for a touch of sweetness and visual appeal.


Fresh is Best: Freshly squeezed lemon and yuzu juice will provide the brightest and most flavorful experience.

Yuzu Magic: Yuzu is a Japanese citrus fruit with a unique flavor profile that combines grapefruit, mandarin orange, and slight floral notes. If fresh yuzu is unavailable, you can substitute ¼ ounce yuzu kosho paste diluted with a little water. Yuzu kosho is a paste made from yuzu peel, chili peppers, and salt. Be aware that it adds a spicy kick, so adjust the amount to your preference.

Egg White Option: The egg white creates a luxurious froth and adds a smooth texture to the drink. If you prefer a vegan option, simply omit the egg white and shake for a slightly longer time (about 20 seconds) to create a frothy layer.

Sweetness to Your Liking: Adjust the amount of simple syrup to your taste preference.
