The New York Sour: A Gin Twist on a Timeless Classic

The New York Sour, a sophisticated and visually stunning cocktail, traditionally features whiskey. But for gin lovers, there's a delightful twist!  This recipe utilizes the botanical boldness of gin, creating a refreshingly tart and elegant drink with a stunning red wine float.

Here's what you'll need to create this unique twist on a classic:

2 oz London Dry Gin

¾ oz Fresh Lemon Juice

¾ oz Simple Syrup

1-2 Tbsp Red Wine (light-bodied like Pinot Noir or Beaujolais work well)

Lemon Twist or Maraschino Cherry (for garnish)

Fill a rocks glass with ice and let it sit for a minute to ensure it's properly chilled. Discard the ice before adding the ingredients.

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, combine the gin, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds to chill and dilute the drink. Strain into the chilled rocks glass filled with fresh ice.

Here comes the magic! Using a bar spoon, slowly pour the red wine over the back of the spoon so that it floats gently on top of the gin sour mixture.

Express the oils from the lemon twist (or add a maraschino cherry) by gently squeezing it over the drink and then add it as a garnish.

Tips & Tricks:

Use the freshest lemon juice you can find for the most vibrant flavor.

Make your own simple syrup by simmering equal parts sugar and water until the sugar dissolves.

Choose a lighter-bodied red wine like Pinot Noir or Beaujolais for the best visual effect and to avoid overpowering the gin sour.

So ditch the ordinary and embrace the sophisticated twist of the New York Sour with gin. With its perfect balance of sweet, tart, and botanical complexity, and the stunning red wine float, it's the perfect conversation starter and a delightful way to experience a gin sour in a whole new light. Cheers!
