The Red Akuma: A Spicy and Refreshing Whiskey Cocktail

The Red Akuma, translating to "Red Devil" in Japanese, lives up to its name with a fiery kick balanced by refreshing citrus and a touch of smokiness. This recipe utilizes Japanese whiskey and Thai chilies for a unique and exciting cocktail experience.


2 ounces Japanese Whiskey (preferably a smoky single malt)

1/2 ounce Agave Nectar

3/4 ounce Blood Orange Soda

1 Slit Thai Chili Pepper (seeds removed, for spice level preference)

Lime Wedge (for garnish)

Kujira Ryukyu 12 Year 750ML


Chill your glass: Place a rocks glass in the freezer for at least 15 minutes.

Muddle the chili (optional): If you prefer a more intense spice level, add the Thai chili pepper (seeds removed) to the chilled rocks glass and muddle it gently with a bar spoon to release some of the capsaicin oil.

Combine liquids: Add the Japanese whiskey, agave nectar, and blood orange soda to the glass (with or without muddled chili, depending on your preference).

Stir gently:  Give the drink a quick stir to combine the ingredients without over-diluting it.

Garnish time: Add a lime wedge for a touch of citrus and visual appeal.


Smoky single malt whiskies like Laphroaig or Ardbeg pair well with the spicy kick of the chili pepper. If you prefer a milder smoke flavor, a blended whisky can be used.

Agave nectar adds a touch of sweetness to balance the tartness of the blood orange soda and the heat from the chili pepper. Adjust the amount to your preference.

Blood orange soda provides a beautiful red hue and a unique citrus flavor that complements the smokiness of the whiskey. If unavailable, regular orange soda can be used, but the taste profile will be slightly different.

Start with a single Thai chili pepper, seeds removed, and adjust the quantity based on your desired spice level. Remember, you can always add more spice, but you can't take it away!

Freshly squeezed lime juice can be used as a substitute for the lime wedge, but the wedge adds a nice visual touch.
